PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington varsity eights were convincing victors in the featured men's and women's races Saturday as the Huskies opened their 2003-04 rowing season at the 15th-annual Portland Loop competition on the Willamette River.
The event was a head race in which crews started at intervals from a single-file line beginning in Lake Oswego. The finish line was 7,000 meters (4.34 miles) away at Oaks Park in Portland.
The Huskies' entry in the men's Championship Eight event included five rowers from the varsity eight crew that won the 2003 Pac-10 championship and was the national runner-up at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships. Washington posted a winning time of 22-minutes, 49.22-seconds Saturday to finish 39 seconds ahead Oregon State's runner-up mark of 23:28.50. The Beavers were ninth-place finishers in the 2003 IRA varsity eight race.

The top UW women's crew included two members of last year's varsity eight that finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.
