Two Former ASU Grapplers Capture Third at Sunkist Kids/ASU International

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 19th annual Sunkist Kids/Arizona State International Open came to a conclusion Saturday inside Wells Fargo Arena with a pair of former Sun Devil wrestlers walking away with third-place finishes. Both Danny Felix and Kellan Fluckiger, ASU's heavyweight coach, ended the tournament on top of their opponents.

Competing under the Sunkist Kids team banner at 120kg/264.5 pounds, Fluckiger opened the day with a 4-0 loss to fellow team member Melvin Douglas in the semifinals. Fluckiger rebounded later in the day with a 5-1 decision over Canada's Eric Kirschner in the bronze match. Fluckiger finished with a 3-1 record in the tournament.

Felix, competing for Sunkist at 60kg/132 pounds, dropped a hard-fought 2-1 overtime referee's decision in the semifinals to teammate Yero Washington to fall into the third-place match. In the bronze match, Felix scored a 3-2 decision over Jason Kutz of the U.S. Army.

No current Sun Devil wrestlers advanced out of pool action that was held Friday. Overall, 23 Sun Devils took part in the meet with 10 going 1-1 in the pool competition.

The Sun Devils return to action Nov. 23 at the Missouri Open for the official start to the 2003-04 season. One week later, No. 3 Iowa comes to town for a 2 p.m. dual Nov. 30 inside Wells Fargo Arena.
