EUGENE, Ore. - California lost to Oregon, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Pape' Field. The Golden Bears dropped to 7-6-3 overall (2-4 Pac-10), while the Ducks improved to 8-8 (2-3 Pac-10).
Cal outshot Oregon, 8-5, in the first half, but the Ducks entered halftime with a 1-0 lead on an 11th-minute goal from Mele French. Nicole Garbin took a free kick from about 25 yards, and French headed it into the goal.
The Bears tried unsuccessfully to score the equalizer in the second half. The Ducks' Andrea Valadez tallied an insurance goal in the 83rd minute off another assist from Garbin.
Forward Katie Ratican and defender Nadia Al-Lami each had three of the Bears' 14 shots, while Garbin tallied seven of her team's 16. Domenique Lainez posted seven saves to help Oregon defeat Cal for the first time in school history.
Cal returns to Berkeley for its final two regular-season home games on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2. On Friday, the Bears face Washington State at 3 p.m., before entertaining Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
