Bears win 4 of 6 events at Head of the American
Oct. 25, 2003
RANCHO CORDOVA - Under a cloudless sky and in temperatures reaching the 90s, Cal women's crew took a break from its fall training to compete at the Head of the American on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova Saturday. The Bears competed in six different events and won four of them, including the women's open eight.
The other three events which the Cal women won were the women's collegiate novice eight, women's open pair and the mixed eight. Pac-10 rivals Stanford and USC also competed, and Stanford won the women's double and women's open four.
'Today was nice to get out and race, especially for the novices,' head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'Everyone on our team has been working extremely hard, and these head races break up the training well. Even though Stanford and USC were here, it's really tough to gauge our speed against these other programs for a variety of reasons. The side-by-side racing in the spring is a whole different story, and the Pac-10 will again have some tough competition.'
