ITA Women's West Regional Cancelled Due to Wildfires

Oct. 27, 2003

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The ITA Women's West Regional was cancelled Sunday due to the rapidly spreading wildfires raging throughout Southern California. The Wildcats still had one singles player and one doubles team remaining in the regional tournament.

Junior Dianne Hollands was set to compete in the semifinals of the tournament. The doubles team of junior Kelly Perry and Hollands would have competed in the quarterfinal round.

The championships, which were being co-hosted by San Diego State and San Diego, were originally scheduled to have the singles and doubles semifinal rounds on Sunday and the championship matches on Monday.

The ITA decided Monday that the two highest remaining seeds in singles and the highest remaining seed in doubles would advance to the national tournament. This advanced top-seeded Jackie Carlton (UCLA) and second-seeded Luana Magnani (USC) in singles play. The top-seeded doubles team of Carlton and Lauren Fisher (UCLA) will also move on.

The Wildcats will next compete at the Fall Desert Class in Palm Springs, California.
