Oct. 27, 2003
SEATTLE - Former University of Washington crew competitors Erica Schwab and Sean Mulligan have returned to their alma mater as assistant coaches with the women's rowing team, first-year head coach Eleanor McElvaine announced.
Schwab will assume McElvaine's former position as the women's novice coach. Mulligan will assist McElvaine in his capacity as the women's varsity assistant coach.
'Both Erica and Sean are products of the Washington rowing program and that is important,' said McElvaine who was named the head coach on Aug. 13 after 13 seasons as an assistant on the UW staff. 'Both of them are very good coaches. Erica got some valuable experience back East and at Oregon State. Sean did a great job last year with the varsity four men's crew.'
Schwab comes to UW from Oregon State where she served as the novice/freshman coach for the Beavers. Prior to that, she spent four years at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Schwab was Trinity's novice women's coach before taking over as the head coach in 1998. She also served as an assistant coach on the women's basketball staff at Trinity for the 1997-98 season.
A product of Anacortes (Wash.) High School, Schwab first came to Washington as an undergraduate and rowed from 1992-95. She won Pacfic-10 Conference championships with the 1992 novice eight crew and the 1994 varsity four boat. Her 1993 junior varsity eight won the Pac-10 title and finished second nationally.
Schwab was invited to participate at the U.S. pre-elite training camp in 1995, where she rowed at the National Training Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. After completing her eligibility at UW, Schwab remained on campus as the varsity intern coach and tutored the third and fourth varsity boats.
Schwab graduated from the University of Washington in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
Mulligan accepted a full-time position on the Husky women's staff after serving last season as men's varsity intern. He directed the UW varsity four to the national championship at the 2003 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships.
A graduate of LaSalle High School in Lansdale, Pa., Mulligan originally came to Washington as a coxswain beginning in the 1995-96 season.
As a sophomore in 1997, he coxed the men's varsity eight to an undefeated season. The Huskies finished first at the IRA Championships to win UW's 11th all-time varsity eight national title, the school's first since 1970. Mulligan was the team captain in 1999. He guided the varsity eight to a silver-medal performance at the 1998 IRA Championships and a bronze in 1999.
In international competition, Mulligan helped the U.S. Under-23 crew win gold at the World Rowing Championships. He coxed the US lightweight eight that finished second at the 1998 World Championships.
Mulligan graduated from the University of Washington in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
