Stanford Men Defend Open 8+ Gold At The Head Of The American

Oct. 28, 2003

Lake Natoma, CA-- The Stanford University Men's Varsity defended their title in the Men's Open 8+ event at the Head of the American. The Novice Collegiate 8+ Event also produced gold medals for the first-year Cardinal oarsman.

In the Novice 8+ event, Cal and Stanford squared off on equitable ground in a race of non-scholarship first-year rowers. The result saw the Cardinal novices defeat the Cal novices by six seconds. Racing proved spirited and aggressive, with all Stanford Crews pushing hard down the course. The first month of training yielded the positive results on display.

In the Open 8+ event, the Cardinal started quickly and settled to a powerful rhythm, leading to the 17 second margin of victory. Coach Craig Amerkhanian noted: 'Our team pulled for each other today.' In the Novice Collegiate 8+ event, assistant coach Jon Allbin remarked: 'Our guys have been learning and growing since October 1. I am proud of the effort the crew demonstrated. The first eleven days of on the water work led to their performance. As the first time this boat has even rowed together, their performance will pay dividends later this year.'
