Women's Golf Travels To Hooters Match Play Championship

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State women's golf team travels to North Myrtle Beach, S.C., this weekend to take part in the inaugural Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, November 2-4. The Sun Devils begin play on Sunday against No. 2 seed Auburn, who is ranked sixth nationally by Golfweek. The Sun Devils are a No. 15 seed.

The National Golf Coaches Association hosts the event, which is held at the renowned, four-course Barefoot Resort. The 16-team field boasts eight of the top 10 teams in the country according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, including the top four teams in the NCAA.

LINEUP, HOOTERS MATCH PLAY: ASU's lineup in North Myrtle Beach will feature sophomore Sara Jones (Valencia, Calif.), freshman Tiffany Tavee (Gilbert, Ariz.), sophomore Alissa Kuczka (Phoenix, Ariz.), junior Josefin Gustafsson (Falkoping, Sweden), junior Erin Tone (Gilbert, Ariz.) and freshman Charmaine Erasmus (Bradenton, Fla.).

THE FIELD, HOOTERS MATCH PLAY: The field at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship includes many of the top teams in the nation. Aside from the Sun Devils, also competing at the tournament are No. 1 Duke, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 California, No. 6 Auburn, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Florida, No. 11 Ohio State, No. 14 USC, No. 16 Texas, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 23 North Carolina, Stanford and Purdue.

ASU, LAST TIME OUT: Arizona State's women's golf squad finished the Stanford/Pepsi Intercollegiate October 17-19, with an 11th-place finish. The team finished with a three-day total of 905 (304-300-301=905) to finish the tournament at 41-over par.

Leading the Sun Devils were sophomore Alissa Kuczka (Phoenix, Ariz.) (79-71-73=223) and freshman Tiffany Tavee (Gilbert, Ariz.) (73-75-75=223), who both finished the tournament at seven-over par and tied for 39th-place. Sophomore Sara Jones (Valencia, Calif.) finished in 54th (76-76-76=228) at 12-over for the tournament with junior Erin Tone (Gilbert, Ariz.) in 67th at 16-over (76-78-78=232) and junior Josefin Gustafsson (Falkoping, Sweden) in 80th at 23-over (79-83-77=239) rounding out the squad's five members. Junior Jamie Michaud (University Place, Wash.) competed as an individual and tied for 70th at 17-over (77-77-79=233).

HEAD COACH Melissa McNamara Luellen: Melissa McNamara Luellen is in her second year as the head coach of the Arizona State women's golf team. In her initial year at the helm of the program, she guided the Sun Devils to five top-five finishes, including top-three placings at the Landfall Tradition and the Wildcat Invitational. Luellen came to ASU after two seasons as the head coach at her alma mater, the University of Tulsa. A former All-American for the Golden Hurricane, she succeeded her mother, Dale McNamara, who retired in 2000 following a 26-year career that saw her Tulsa teams win four national championships. In her two seasons as Tulsa's head coach, Luellen led her team to seven tournament titles including back-to-back Western Athletic Conference and NCAA Central Regional championships. She also earned WAC Coach of the Year honors in each of her two seasons and was the 2002 Central Regional Coach of the Year.
