Bruin Volleyball Downs Cougars 3-1

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team defeated Washington State in four games on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion. Game scores were 20-21, 30-24, 23-30, 30-22. Brynn Murphy led four Bruins with double figure kills, checking in with a match-high 16. With the win, the Bruins improve to 18-4 (9-3 Pac-10), while WSU falls to 7-16 (3-9 Pac-10).
Neither team hit for a high percentage in the first game of the match, but Brittany Ringel led the Bruins in the game with six kills, while Brynn Murphy hit .500 with four kills on six attacks with one error. Heather Cullen led UCLA with two blocks in the game.
In game two, the Bruins hit .318 as a team, led by Ringel with five kills on eight attacks for a .375 attack percentage and Colby Lyman who had five kills on 10 attacks with one error for a .400 attack percentage.
The Bruins came out of the locker room flat for game three, and hit .082 as a team. Washington State scored the first eight points of the game, and UCLA fell 30-22.
Game four saw the Bruins take an early lead, and the Bruins held that lead to take the game 30-22. Brynn Murphy led the Bruins in the game, with an error-free six kills on 14 attacks for a .429 attack percentage. Colby Lyman had five kills on nine swings with one error for a .444 attack percentage, while Cira Wright added five kills of her own.
For the match, Murphy led all players with 16 kills and 17.5 points. Heather Cullen was close behind in both categories with 15 kills and four block assists for 17 points. Ringel and Lyman also had double-figure kills with 11 apiece.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday night with a 7 pm match against No. 10 Washington.
