Cougars Fall To No. 8 UCLA In Four

Oct. 31, 2003

LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins defeated the Washington State Cougars 30-21, 30-24, 23-30, 30-22 in Pacific-10 Conference volleyball action Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.

The loss drops WSU to 7-16 and 3-9 in the Pac-10 while UCLA improves to 18-4 and 9-3 in conference play.

Zanda Bautre led WSU with 13 kills and 17 digs. Melanie Greene and Megan Camp also registered double-digits in digs for WSU with 17 and 11, respectively. Brynn Murphy led UCLA with a match-high 16 kills while the Bruins' Chrissie Zartman recorded a match-high 20 digs.

After dropping the first two games the Cougars recovered to get back in the match in game three.

Fitting, with it being Halloween, that WSU seemed to put a spell over the Bruins in game three as the Cougars scored eight consecutive points to begin the game. The Cougars extended their lead to as much as nine on three occasions and although UCLA pulled to within four at 27-23, WSU claimed the game 30-23.

In the third game, WSU hit at a .344 clip and recorded 14 kills, just four fewer than the team amassed in the first two games.

Despite spotting the Bruins the first four points of the fourth game, WSU rallied to tie the game at nine. UCLA opened up a 16-11 advantage but the Cougars would close to within two at 19-17; however, five consecutive Bruin points gave UCLA a lead WSU could not overcome as the Bruins captured the fourth game 30-22.

The Cougars were without the services of their team leader in kills, Kristen Carlson, who sat out with a sore left knee.

WSU returns to action at No. 1 USC, Saturday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.
