OSU Earns 2-1 Win At Arizona
Oct. 31, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - -
A Tessa Baker goal in the 71st minute lifted the Oregon State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Arizona Friday night in Pacific-10 Conference action.
The Beavers improved to 7-8-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Pac-10 and have won two straight.
OSU's three conference wins are the most ever under sixth-year head coach Steve Fennah, whose team has a 3-1-1 record in its last five games.
Lindsey Beem set up Baker's game-winner with a through-ball, leaving Baker a 10-yard shot that gave OSU the final lead at 2-1.
'We played a very, very good game tonight,' Fennah said. 'Arizona deserves a lot of credit - they played well and came at us. Fortunately, we stepped it up on our end and answered.
'We defended well tonight. Amy Johnson made a very critical save late in the game coming out to stop a shot, and we defended well aside from that.'
Arizona's (5-9-2, 1-4-1) Lauren Winters netted the equalizer in the 56th minute, taking a pass from Lisa Kosena on the right side and drilling a 15-yard shot to make it 1-1.
Johnson, making only her second career start as a Beaver, made nine saves Friday, topping her previous career high of eight.
Baker entered this weekend second in the Pac-10 in scoring, and now has 23 points (10 goals, 3 assists).
Beem moved into 10th on OSU's all-time scoring list with her 37th point; she is fifth in career assists with 15.
The Beavers were without the services of Stacey Mescher over the final eight minutes, 39 seconds after she received the first red card of her career.
Arizona owned a 20-6 advantage in shots.
The Beavers face Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tempe.
