Ready Scores Twice To Lift Huskies Past Stanford 3-1

Oct. 31, 2003

SEATTLE - Washington men's soccer came back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Stanford, 3-1, at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening. Senior Troy Ready scored twice, including the game-winner, to lift the Huskies to the Pac-10 victory, a win which also marked the 150th for Dean Wurzberger as Washington's head coach.

Along with an earlier season 1-0 win in Palo Alto, Washington (10-2-2, 3-2-1 Pac-10) defeated Stanford in back-to-back meetings for the first time since matches played in 1999 and 2000. The Huskies handed Stanford (2-13-2, 0-8-0) its eighth straight loss as the Cardinal remains winless in Pac-10 play.

Stanford did break a six-game scoreless streak with an early goal at the 8:32 mark. James Twellman served a cross from the left side to Darren Fernandez who fired a shot from the top of the box that found its way past UW senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman.

The Huskies answered just under a minute later, as freshman Ty Harden headed in a corner kick from junior C.J. Klaas to knot the score at the 9:23 mark. Washington notched the go-ahead goal in the 18th minute, as cross from junior Brett Wiesner found Ready who beat Stanford keeper Andrew Kartunen one-on-one and finessed the ball past the near post.

Washington sealed the win in the 70th minute on Ready's second goal of the game when he tapped in a loose ball just front of the goal. Ready, now with five goals on the year, led all Huskies players with four shots. Klaas, Wiesner and junior Casey Armstrong each tallied three.

Waltman made seven saves in goal for Washington, while Kartunen grabbed six. Leading the Cardinal attack were Fernandez and Matt Janusz with four shots each.

The victory improves Wurzberger's 12-year overall record at Washington to 150-59-23. Wurzberger also reached the 150-win career mark earlier this season, a record which currently stands at 158-67-28 (13 years).

The Huskies continue their homestand hosting California, Sun., Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. The annual alumni game will be played at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the East Practice Field.
