Stanford Blanks No. 18 UW Women in Soccer
Oct. 31, 2003
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Jennifer Farenbaugh scored the game-winning goal against Washington for the second straight season, a put-back less than two minutes into the contest Friday that led Stanford to a 3-0 victory over the 18th-ranked Huskies in Pac-10 women's soccer action at Maloney Field.
The defending conference champion Cardinal (9-7-2) improved to 4-2-1 in Pac-10 play while Washington (9-5-3) dropped to 2-3-1. The Huskies remained winless in games at Stanford with an 0-6-2 all-time record.
Farenbaugh netted the only goal Stanford would need at 1:49. She retrieved a rebound from a teammate's missed attempt and headed the ball into the net. Last year, Farenbaugh tallied the lone goal during the Cardinal's 1-0 win in Seattle.
The final two Stanford goals came from long range, including Allyson Marquand's 20-yard blast at 49:58 that was assisted by Natalie Sanderson. Brittany Oliveira capped the scoring at 74:29 on an unassisted strike from 30 yards out.
The Cardinal became only the second team to record as many as three goals against the Washington defense that entered the game surrendering less than one goal per game. The Huskies kept the shot count close, trailing only 16-12. Leading UW scorer Tina Frimpong was kept off the board despite a game-high seven shots.
Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart denied Frimpong and the rest of the Huskies, saving eight shots en route to her seventh shutout.
UW freshman Kelsey Rasmussen, who had not allowed a goal as a collegian, registered three saves. She yielded all three goals after blanking all previous opponents in 405 minutes of action. Rasmussen sustained her first loss as a starter after winning the first three Husky games she opened between the posts.
Washington remains in the Bay Area for its final regular-season road game, Sunday at California. They play next weekend in Seattle, Nov. 7 against Arizona State at 7 p.m. and Nov. 9 against Arizona at noon.
