Nov. 1, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State senior outside hitter Juliana Escobar recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 19 kills and 15 digs, but it wasn't enough as the sixth-ranked California Golden Bears defeated the Sun Devils in four games Saturday night in Pac-10 Volleyball action at Haas Pavilion. Game scores were 30-23, 30-20, 28-30, 30-25 in favor of the Golden Bears.
Arizona State dropped both matches against the nationally ranked Stanford Cardinal and Golden Bears during the Bay Area road trip and lost at Haas Pavilion for only the second time in the last 11 meetings between the two schools. ASU falls to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in Pac-10 play. The Golden Bears bounced back from a three-game loss to Arizona a night earlier, improving to 19-3 overall and 10-3 in conference action.
Escobar (Brasilia, Brazil) recorded 19 kills on an efficient .390 (19-3-41) hitting percentage and led four players in double figures with 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Natalie Harris (Tempe, Ariz.) added 16 kills (.303) and had 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Freshman middle blocker Tierra Burnley (Santa Clarita, Calif.) contributed eight kills after setting a career high with 11 Friday night against Stanford. Senior libero Courtney Blocher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior setter Cheryl Anglin each had 12 digs in the loss.
Junior All-American outside hitter Mia Jerkov led the Golden Bears with 22 kills, two service aces and two blocks for 23 total points. Middle blocker Camille Leffall added 13 kills (.321) and tallied a match-high nine total blocks. Freshman setter Samantha Carter led all players with 51 assists.
The Sun Devils return home next weekend to face another pair of top 10 ranked teams when UCLA (Friday, 7 p.m.) and No. 1 USC (Saturday, 7 p.m.) invade Wells Fargo Arena.
