No. 6 Cal Volleyball Defeats Arizona State, 3-1

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 6 ranked Cal volleyball team (19-3, 10-3) rebounded after a tough loss Friday to defeat Arizona State (8-13, 3-9), 3-1 (30-23, 30-20, 28-30, 30-25) Saturday evening at Haas Pavilion. After losing to Arizona, 3-0, the night before, the Bears put in a solid effort against the Sun Devils, led by junior All-America Mia Jerkov's 22 kills, 13 kills from junior middle hitter Camille Leffall and 10 kills from sophomore middle hitter Alicia Powers.

Powers also had a .500 hitting percentage (10 kills, two errors, 16 attempts) for the match. Freshman libero Jillian Davis had a team-high 17 digs for Cal. ASU was led by Juliana Escobar's 19 kills and 15 digs. The Sun Devils were plagued by 18 service errors.

The Bears pretty much dominated the first two games, winning 30-23 and 30-28. The Sun Devils came back to win game three, 30-28, and had a lead in the early part of game four. Cal was finally able to tie the fourth game, 15-15, on a service ace by sophomore outside hitter Jenna Brown. Cal eventually got ahead, 28-23, behind kills from Jessica Zatica, block assists from Leffall and Zatica and a kill from Leffall. After ASU got within 29-25 on an Escobar kill, Leffall put the match away with a kill from the middle.

The Bears will next travel to No. 9 ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford, Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion. Cal had defeated the Cardinal, 3-2, on Oct. 11 at Haas Pavilion, topping Stanford for the first time since 1982.
