Cal Edges No. 8 Washington, 1-0
Nov. 2, 2003
Seattle, Wash. - Cal kept its playoff aspirations alive today, as it defeated No. 8 Washington, 1-0. The win evens the Golden Bears record at 8-8-2, 4-4-1 Pac-10, while the Huskies fell to 10-3-2, 3-3-1 Pac-10.
In what was a very tight game with few opportunities, the Bears found a way to break through. Nick Hatzke took one of four second half corners for the Bears and found Tyson Wahl at the edge of the 18-yard box. Wahl's shot beat Washington goalkeeper Danny Waltman for the lone goal of the match.
The Bears only had two shots on goal the whole game, while the Huskies didn't manage to challenge goalkeeper Mike Oseguera once. Oseguera escaped, to the credit of a stingy Cal defense, with the easiest of shutouts without facing a single shot on goal.
Seven different Bears registered shots, but today was not about offense. Cal managed to break through against a very highly acclaimed Washington team. This was the win the Bears needed to make their postseason push.
Now Cal heads home to face San Jose State on Sunday before finishing up Pac-10 play at Stanford the following Sunday. If the Bears win out, they will have the ten wins often required for a ticket to the tournament.
