Cal Loses Tie Breaker to USC at Hooters Collegiate Match Play

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 7-seeded California lost to No. 10-seeded USC in the opening round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship Sunday at the Barefoot Resort. The teams tied, 2.5.2-5, but the Trojans advanced to the second round by being up three holes overall.

Cal senior Sarah Huarte won at the No. 1 spot, 2 and 1, and sophomore Sophia Sheridan claimed the No. 5 spot, 4 and 3. Senior Claire Dury earned half a point for the Bears by tying at No. 2.At No. 3, USC's Anna Rawson defeated freshman Danielle Nash, 5 and 3, and the Trojans Stephanie Hickerson defeated senior Anna Temple at the No. 4 spot, 4 and 3.

With the loss, the Bears moved into the consolation bracket. Cal's match with No. 15-seeded Arizona State was suspended due to darkness and will be completed on Monday. Huarte is 4 up over Alissa Kuczka through 11 holes at No. 1, Dury is all square with Josefin Gustafsson through 11 at No. 2, Nash is 1 up over Sara Jones through 12 at No. 3, Temple is down 3 to Charmaine Erasmus through 12 at No. 4, and Sheridan is down 1 to Tiffany Tavee through 11 at No. 5.
