No. 25 Huskies Blanked By Cal 1-0

Nov. 2, 2003

SEATTLE - Tyson Wahl scored the game's only goal in the 60th minute as California handed No. 25 Washington a 1-0 loss in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field Sunday afternoon. It marked just the third loss for the Huskies this season, which had only been defeated by No. 1 UCLA and No. 15 Oregon State prior to Sunday.

Washington (10-3-2, 3-3-1 Pac-10) and California (8-8-2, 4-4-1 Pac-10) played through a scoreless first half until Wahl put Cal on the board at the 59:14 mark. A corner kick from Nick Hatzke found Wahl at the top of the box and he fired a shot past UW goalkeeper Danny Waltman for the score.

The Huskies put the pressure on Cal's defense late in the second half, with scoring opportunities from junior forward Brett Wiesner and senior forward Sean Giudice. Wiesner had two shots in the last ten minutes of the match, both headers that sailed just wide of the goal. Washington had a free kick within scoring range at the 1:54 minute mark, but was unable to capitalize.

UW outshot Cal 13-9, led by Wiesner's team-high three shots. Junior forward Casey Armstrong, junior midfielder C.J. Klaas and sophomore midfielder Jeff Hoover each had two shots. Leading Cal's offensive effort were Wahl, Mike Munoz and Nick Hatzke all with two shots apiece.

Sunday's match marked just the second time this season the Husky offense has been held scoreless, the other shutout a 1-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA.

Cal and Washington battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in their earlier season meeting in Berkeley (Oct. 10). Sunday's match marked the first time Cal has ever defeated Washington on its home field. UW held an 8-0-3 overall record at home versus the Golden Bears going into today's contest.

Just three matches remain on the Huskies' regular season schedule as Washington battles to return to postseason play for the eighth time in the last nine years. UW will hit the road this weekend to face UCLA, Fri. Nov. 7 (7 p.m.) and Fresno State, Sun., Nov. 9 (2 p.m.). Washington's season finale will be at home versus Oregon State, Sun., Nov. 16 (2 p.m.)
