Bears Ready for Second Major

Nov. 3, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - The 2003 ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three national championships for collegiate tennis this season, will be hosted by the University of Michigan November 6-9.

The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournaments for Division I women, will be hosted by Michigan at its Varsity Tennis Center for the first time after a nine-year stint with Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas.

Representing Cal in the elite field will be Sasha Podkolzina and Raquel Kops-Jones.

Podkolzina, the former age group national champion, made an instant impact on the Cal program two weekends ago with a scintillating performance in her first ever collegiate action. Coming off an injury, Podkolzina was not expected do much, but like all great ones she thrived under the circumstances, competing in 11 matches in four days and advancing to the finals in the doubles and singles of the ITA Northwest Regional. Podkolzina will be asked to pull together the same type of effort this week as she teams up with Kops-Jones for what appears to be another grueling weekend of tennis action.

Kops-Jones enters the contest as one of the favorites. She entered the fall ranked third in the country in singles and is the defending ITA All-American Singles Champion. Not to mention she knows a thing or two about playing doubles, as she is one-half of the reigning 2003 NCAA Doubles Champions. Kops-Jones should definitely be poise for another big weekend.

Kops-Jones comes into the tourney 5-0 in singles competition and Podkolzina is 5-1. In doubles the pair are 4-1 with their only lost coming in the ITA regional final.
