Intrasquad Meet Set For Saturday
Nov. 4, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State will give wrestling fans their first look at the 2003-04 Beavers when OSU holds its annual Intrasquad Meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. Saturday's matches will help determine Oregon State's lineup for its season-opener on Nov. 15 at Nebraska; admission for the Intrasquad Meet is free.
Oregon State brings back 10 lettermen and six starters from last seasons's team, which went 10-8 in dual meets and finished third in the Pacific-10 Championships. Returning from OSU's postseason lineup are junior Tim Norman (133 pounds), sophomore Mike Unger Jr. (141), sophomore Tony Hook (149), sophomore Jeremy Larson (157), junior Matt Ellis (165) and senior Jed Pennell (184). Also, sophomore Dan Pitsch was the Beavers' starter at 184 pounds until a season-ending ankle injury. Pennell will drop to 174 pounds this season and Larson may redshirt.
Pairings for the Intrasquad Meet will be determined by a series of matches held during OSU's practices this week.
'We have some situations where we have some older guys who don't really have a lot of match experience, but we also have some young guys who are going to be fighting those older, more experienced guys for a starting spot,' said OSU head coach Joe Wells, who is entering his 12th season at Oregon State. 'It's a nice balance. In probably seven weight classes, we're going to be battling every other week to see who it's going to be unless someone jumps right in there and demonstrates they can solidify the spot and nail things down.'
The meet caps a weekend that will include Oregon State's fall wrestling clinic for coaches and athletes on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning; clinic events will be held in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room in Langton Hall. Teams wishing to participate may register at the first session, which will be Friday at 3:30 p.m.; cost is $50 for as many wrestlers as a team wishes to bring. For more information on the clinic, call OSU assistant coach Jeff Cardwell at (541) 737-2552.
