Q & A with Tessa Baker

Nov. 4, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore -- - Sophomore Tessa Baker (Mission Viejo, Calif.) is making a big impact on this year's squad by putting up team highs in both goals and shots. Of the 43 shots that Baker has tallied this year, 10 of them have found the back of the net. With 10 goals already this season, Baker has moved into a tie for 4th place on the OSU single season goals list and is 8th on the single season points list. Baker, who was a big contributor off the bench last year with three goals and one assist, has started all 18 games for the Beavers this season and has shown her ability to take it to the goal or find the open runner. This following is a question-and-answer session with Baker before a recent practice.

YOU HAVE PROVEN THIS YEAR TO BE A MAJOR SCORING THREAT FOR OPPONENTS, WAS THEIR ANYTHING THAT YOU DID IN THE OFF-SEASON TO HELP PREPARE YOU FOR THIS SEASON?

'I was actually injured this off-season, so I had about a month and a half to get ready before the season. I just trained everyday, twice a day, and just got as ready as I could in that short amount of time. I just came out with a good attitude, I guess.'

WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE YOUR GREATEST STRENGTHS ON THE FIELD?

'I would have to say my distribution. I feel that I have a good vision on the field and I know that I am on the same page as everyone around me. I know who really wants the ball and what their strengths are.'

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-GAME RITUALS THAT YOU DO BEFORE EACH GAME?

'I like to listen to music before each game and I always put on my left shoe before my right shoe.'

WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN PLAYING SOCCER?

'My dad was my coach at first, so he put me into soccer and I have been playing since I was five.'

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PART OF THIS SEASON?

'Costa Rica. The whole trip was a lot of fun and there was great team bonding. I don't think our team would be where it is right now if we didn't go on that trip because we immediately bonded and that was really cool.'

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME WHEN THE SOCCER SEASON ENDS?

'Rest, sleep, and catch up on everything.'

IT SAYS IN YOUR BIO THAT EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE IS YOUR FAVORITE T.V. SHOW. WOULD YOU BE A CONTESTANT IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE CHANCE?

'Yeah, definitely. I think I could beat all of them. I would be way better than they are.'
