UCLA SITS IN DRIVER'S SEAT IN RACE FOR PAC-10 TITLE
Bruins Clinched At Least a Share of 4th Pac-10 Title; Sun Devils Loom in Final Weekend

The UCLA Bruins (14-1-3 overall, 6-0-1 Pac-10), ranked No. 2 in this week's Soccer America and NSCAA/Adidas polls, have already clinched at least a share of their fourth Pac-10 women's soccer title and could win the title outright with one win in their final two matches this weekend... The ARIZONA STATE Sun Devils (10-4-3, 4-2-1), looking for their third NCAA Tournament trip in the last four years, can earn a share of their first Pac-10 title if they win out and the Bruins go winless in the final weekend of regular-season play... ASU enters the weekend one game ahead of the STANFORD Cardinal (9-8-2, 4-3-1), which has won three of its last five matches... Stanford can still catch Arizona State in the race for second place unless the Sun Devils win out... A pack of teams - WASHINGTON, USC and OREGON STATE - are knotted up with identical 3-3-1 Pac-10 records, although the Trojans and Beavers play each other on Sunday... [Pac-10 Tie-breaker: If UCLA and Arizona State were to tie for the 2003 Pac-10 Championship, UCLA would earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship by virtue of the first tie-breaker, winning the head-to-head match on Oct. 24.]

Last year, six Pac-10 teams received invitations to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. while five Pac-10 teams comprised the tournament field in 2001... A league-record seven teams were among the field of 64 in 2000.

PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCLA sophomore forward Iris Mora has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 28-Nov. 3.

Mora, from Cancun, Mexico, helped lead then-No. 3/4 UCLA to shutout wins over crosstown rivals Loyola Marymount (Oct. 29) and USC (Nov. 2). In the match against Loyola Marymount, Mora scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of play, and also tallied an assist en route to a 5-0 Bruin win. In the victory over Conference rival USC, Mora assisted on the first goal by teammate Lindsay Greco, and then notched the insurance score on a header in the 65th minute.

With the win over USC, the Bruins clinched at least a share of the 2003 Pac-10 title and have two games remaining, against the Oregon schools. UCLA remains undefeated in Conference play at 6-0-1, with an overall record of 14-1-3. The Bruins, ranked No. 2 in this week's national polls, have posted three straight shutout victories and have shut out five of their last six opponents overall.

This is Mora's second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's 11th weekly honor all-time.

PAC-10 WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES

ARIZONA: The Cats fell to Oregon State (2-1) and Oregon (1-0) last week as they closed out the 2003 home schedule... FR F Lauren Winters notched a goal in the 56th minute against the Beavers to knot the score at 1-1... Arizona held a 10-5 edge in shots on-goal against Oregon State... UA averages 6.76 corner kicks per game, second in the Pac-10... SO MF Mallory Miller is tied for fourth in the league in shots, with 53.

ARIZONA STATE: ASU defeated Oregon (3-2) and Oregon State (1-0) last week, concluding the 2003 regular season with an unblemished 7-0-1 home record... With the 1-0 win over Oregon State, the Sun Devils recorded their seventh shutout on the season... SO D Stephanie Ebner scored the game-winner against the Beavers, her career-high third goal of the season and second game-winner... Arizona State hopes to make its third NCAA Tournament trip in the last four years when selections are announced Nov. 10.

CALIFORNIA: The Bears played Washington State to a scoreless tie and fell 3-1 to Washington last week as seven seniors played their final games at Edwards Stadium... SO MF Sierra Schlesinger scored Cal's lone goal on the weekend, in the 12th minute against the Huskies... FR GK Anna Key posted four saves against Washington State, including three in overtime, as Cal recorded its seventh shutout of the season.

OREGON: FR F Andrea Valdez scored all three Oregon goals on the weekend as the Ducks fell 3-2 to Arizona State and defeated Arizona 1-0... The win over UA gave Oregon its record-breaking ninth win on the season and helped the Ducks tie a school record with their third Conference win of the year... UO ranks second in the Pac-10 in saves (79), while SO F Nicole Garbin continues to pace the league in shots (65) and shots per game (3.82 avg).

OREGON STATE: The Beavers are coming off a road split after downing Arizona (2-1) and falling to Arizona State (1-0)... OSU's three Pac-10 wins are the most ever under sixth-year head coach Steve Fennah, whose team has a 3-1-1 record in its last five games... SO F Tessa Baker's goal in the 71st minute lifted the Beavers to a 2-1 win over the Wildcats... Baker ranks third in the Pac-10 in scoring (23 points) and is second in goals, with 10.

STANFORD: The Cardinal knocked off Washington 3-0 to win their third game in four tries, but followed with a 1-0 loss to Washington State just two days later... In the win over the Huskies, JR GK Nicole Barnhart picked up her seventh shutout on the season and the 29th of her career... SR D/MF Alyson Marquand scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 50th minute... The three goals scored by the Cardinal equaled the most scored in a game against Washington this year... In the loss to WSU, Stanford tallied 16 shots to the Cougars' three.

UCLA: The Bruins downed Loyola Marymount 5-0 in non-league action and defeated rival USC 2-0 last week... With the win over the Trojans, UCLA clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title... SO F Iris Mora scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the LMU match... Mora also had a hand in both goals against USC, assisting on the first goal of the match and scoring the second... Mora, who paces the Pac-10 in points (30) and assists (12), set the new school single-season assist record with her 12th assist against USC... The win was the Bruins' fifth straight over the Trojans.

USC: Aiming for their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the Trojans conclude the regular season at Oregon and Oregon State... The Trojans fell 2-0 to rival UCLA in its lone match last week... JR GK Julie Peterson is tied for second in the Conference with six shutouts and ranks fourth in saves (61)... Peterson set the USC single-season record with eight shutouts in 2002... FR F Rosa Anna Tantillo leads the team in goals (six) and points (14).

WASHINGTON: The Huskies earned a road split in the Bay Area last weekend, losing 3-0 to Stanford and defeating California 3-1... UW remained winless in eight games at Stanford (0-6-2)... At Stanford, FR GK Kelsey Rasmussen sustained her first loss as a starter after winning the first three matches she started in goal... In the win over Cal, SR MF Blair Ruport and JR F Tina Frimpong connected for back-to-back goals just over two minutes apart... Frimpong leads the Pac-10 with 12 goals on the year, No. 2 in the UW single-season annals... Current UW assistant coach Tami Bennett set the school record with 16 goals during the 2000 season.

WASHINGTON STATE: In road games last week, WSU played Cal to a scoreless tie and defeated Stanford 1-0, it's first win over the Cardinal in 10 years... The shutouts were the sixth and seventh of the year for the Cougars... SO GK Katie Hultin is tied for second in the Pac-10 with six blankings this season... SR F Shelby Brownfield notched the game-winner in the victory over Stanford, just the second Cougar win over the Cardinal in 13 all-time meetings... Brownfield ranks third on the team with five points.
