Dunning Among Semifinalists For Lou Groza Award

Nov. 5, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. --- The Palm Beach County Sports Commission included Washington State's Drew Dunning among 20 semifinalists for the 2003 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Wednesday.

Dunning, as senior from Issaquah, Wash., has connected on 20 of 22 field goal attempts this season and added 24 successful point-after attempts.

'Looking at the list of semifinalists, I'm really honored to be mentioned with this group,' Dunning said. 'I just want to continue to help Washington State win football games. Accolades and awards are great, but if we aren't successful as a team on the field, it doesn't mean as much.'

Dunning is closing in on WSU's career scoring record held by Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson. Dunning's 304 points is just 24 shy of Hanson's career mark of 328.

Dunning has piled up 84 points already in 2003, which is tied for seventh on the school's single season scoring chart. Dunning took over the top spot in that category last season with 113 points.

Dunning, who is in his third season as the starting kicker, has been named Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week twice in 2003.

The Lou Groza Award, now in its 12th year, will be given out during a ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 9 at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
