Getting to Know Bautre From A to Z

Zanda Bautre is a 23-year-old native of Riga, Latvia, and an outside hitter on the Cougar volleyball team. Also known as 'Z,' she is the lone senior and a co-captain on the 2003 WSU squad. She has played in two European Beach Volleyball Championships for Latvia. This season Zanda was named to the Utah Hampton Inn Classic and Cougar Mania All-Tournament teams, and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for her 41 kills/3.73 kpg (.309), 69 assists and 40 digs in the Cougar Mania Tourney. She is the team leader in kills, hitting percentage and digs. In career standings, Zanda is only nine aces away from 10th on the WSU all-time best list with 76. Zanda graduated Cum Laude with a 3.53 GPA in international business last August. She is a 2003-04 Cougar Pride Academic Salute honoree and has been selected to Pac-10 All-Academic team. Zanda is now in the MBA program at WSU.

What do you want to do after grad school? - In an ideal world, go to Manhattan Beach, Calif., and spend everyday playing on the beach and maybe coaching beach volleyball.

What's the last CD you purchased? - Chicago movie soundtrack and European techno music

Beach volleyball or gym volleyball - Beach

Location you least like to play - USC - both their Lyon Center and North Gym are not good to play in.

Location you most like to play - Bohler Gym, and then Haas Arena at Cal and Bank of America Arena at UW.

Most memorable match at WSU - Both wins over Stanford at Bohler Gym.

Before each match I - Take a nap.

If I wasn't playing volleyball I would be - If I was a boy, I'd play ice hockey but otherwise, soccer.

The best thing about Washington State University - Not the weather (it was 25 degrees on the morning of this interview). The people, they are so friendly.

Best friends at WSU - Lorena Arias and Zorana Roganovic, WSU tennis players, and teammate and roommate, Kristen Carlson.

If you could bring one thing from your hometown, what would it be? The sea, because I miss the beach.

If I could change one thing about my game it would be - My blocking technique, I need to keep my hands in the right place.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three Cougar volleyball players would you want to be with? Kristen Carlson, because she is one of my best friends here. Jen Barcus (current teammate), because she will entertain me. She is so funny and she will keep me going. And Holly Harris (former teammate) because she has so many boyfriends and she'll have her cell phone so she'll call someone and they will come and get us.

You are known for your distinctive laugh, what makes you laugh the most? Good jokes but also silly, stupid jokes and stuff like the way Ozzy Osbourne talks.

If someone gave you $100, and had to spend it in one day, what would you buy? I would go to and buy clothes on the internet.
