Women's Basketball Cruises Past Strakonice, 86-60
Nov. 7, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Five different players reached double figures in scoring as Oregon State's women's basketball team cruised to an 86-60 victory against Strakonice, a club team from the Czech Republic, in Friday's season opening exhibition contest.
Senior Hollye Chapman led the Beavers with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while fellow senior Krystal Turner finished with 12 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 clip from the free throw line. Redshirt sophomore Ebony Young buried 5-of-6 field goals for 11 points in her OSU debut, while sophomore Anita Rivera showed she has recovered from a torn ACL last year by chipping in 11 points. Brina Chaney added 11 points and eight rebounds and Leilani Estavan dished out eight assists and pulled down eight boards.
'I was really pleased with our preparation and intensity,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'We were really fired up to play.'
Strakonice took an early 5-0 lead but the Beavers clawed back and used an 8-0 run in the middle of the first half to pull in front 21-13. OSU's pressuring defense dictated the tempo for the remainder of the half and the Beavers took a 44-29 lead into the locker room.
'We learned a lot tonight,' said Spoelstra. 'We took a different look at this team - relating their play to what our opponents in the Pac-10 do - they do this like UW, or this like Stanford, etc.'
OSU held a 55-34 rebounding edge for the game and shot 48-percent (31-for-65) from the field. Strakonice hit just 29-percent (19-for-65) from the floor.
Strakonice's Vendula Mackova led all players with 22 points.
All 12 Oregon State players that dressed for the game saw action on the court.
Oregon State concludes exhibition action on Wednesday when the Beavers face the Chinese National Team, who is ranked as one of the top-10 teams in the world, at 7 p.m.
