No. 15 Oregon State Falls To No. 1 UCLA, 5-0

Nov. 9, 2003

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - -

The No. 1 UCLA Bruins scored early and often as they cruised to a 5-0 win over No. 15 Oregon State on Sunday in Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer action.

The loss ended OSU's school-record tying seven-game winning streak and dropped the Beavers to 13-5-0 overall and 7-2-0 in Pac-10 play.

The loss also knocked OSU out of contention for the Pac-10 title and gave UCLA its 15th consecutive win as the Bruins clinched the conference crown.

OSU finishes its regular season at Washington next Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.

Brandon Owens and Ty Maurin scored in the fourth and seventh minutes, respectively, to give UCLA a commanding 2-0 lead early on.

Owens scored when he followed his own rebounded shot and Aaron Lopez assisted Maurin's goal.

Adolfo Gregorio gave UCLA a 3-0 halftime cushion with a bizarre goal in the 28th minute. Gregorio and a Beaver player collided on a tackle by Gregorio, and the collision sent the ball careening into the Beaver net from 30 yards out.

'It was a great lesson today for our guys,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'Give UCLA all the credit in the world - they came to play on their home pitch.

'Any time a team puts in two goals against you in the first seven minutes of the match... those goals came too easy for them.'

Mike Enfield and Matt Taylor combined for two assists on each of UCLA's final two scores - one by Jordan Harvey at 51:16 and the last by Cliff McKinley at 70:37.

UCLA outshot the Beavers 17-6 for the game and OSU keeper Peter Billmeyer, who gave up all five goals, saved six shots before lifted in favor of Matthew Fitchett in the 77th minute.OSU, which entered the weekend 10th in the nation in scoring at 2.31 goals-per game, was shutout for the first time since a 2-0 loss at Portland on Sept. 7 in the fourth game of the year.

OSU is now 2-11-0 in the all-time series with UCLA, including a 2-1 loss in Corvallis on Oct. 3.

'UCLA came with a lot of energy - give credit to them and their coaching staff,' Taylor said. 'They played like a Pac-10 champion should play.

'We've had a great season so far. This was a good wakeup call prior to the playoffs and we look forward to getting back at it and playing at Washington on Sunday.'
