Nov. 9, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - For the fourth straight game, the 22nd-ranked Arizona State soccer team (12-4-3; 6-2-1 Pac-10) scored a late second half goal to lift them to victory as they defeated Washington State (6-11-2; 2-5-2 Pac-10), 2-1 Sunday at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. The conference win also placed ASU in second place alone in the Pac-10, marking the Sun Devils best finish ever in its eight-year history. The Devils have already tied their overall win total from last year and their current (.710) winning percentage is also an all-time best.
With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Sun Devil forward Kelley Bond, after moving the ball all the way from the back, received a pass from Manya Makoski inside the Washington State penalty box. Bond took a touch and shot the ball past the WSU goalkeeper inside the lower left-post to give ASU the win. It was Bond's first goal of the year and her first career game-winning goal.
The Cougars started the match quickly with less than five minutes gone, WSU senior forward Shelby Brownfield scored the first-goal of the game. Brownfield took a shot from 25-yards out on the right side over ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham into the upper-left corner to give WSU the 1-0 lead.
However, Arizona State's leading scorer Brittany Cooper tied the match at the 11:33 mark. Cooper dribbled down the left flank into the middle of the field where she took a blast from 25 yards out into the upper-left corner of the goal. Cooper now has scored career-high nine goals.
Leading the Cougs in shots was senior Nicole Wilcox with five, followed by Kim Morgan with three. Makoski took three shots for the Sun Devils, followed by Katie Mahoney and Cooper who each had two shots.
Up next, the 64-team NCAA Women's College Cup selection show will be aired live on Monday at 2:00 p.m. (Arizona time) on ESPNews. For the second straight year, the Devils are expected to receive one of the at-large bids to the tournament.
