Stanford Downs Love & Basketball 69-52

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season in exhibition with a win over Love & Basketball 69-52 at Maples Pavilion on Sunday. Four Cardinal scored in double figures led by forward Chelsea Trotter with 15 points on 7-of-8 field goals. Senior Nicole Powell recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Trotter set the tone with Stanford's first points of the game. From the opening two points the Cardinal never gave up its lead. Stanford went on a 5-0 run in the first four minutes of play before Love & Basketball tallied their first point of the game on a free throw at 17:50.
The Cardinal increased their lead into the double figures with a three-pointer from Susan King Borchardt at 9:39 that put the score to 20-8. Stanford held Love & Basketball to a single shot in the last six minutes of the first half, at one time taking a 19-point lead after a Kelley Suminski three-pointer.
The half ended with Stanford in the lead 36-19 and shooting 55.6 percent (15-27) from the field. In the first half, Borchardt went 5-of-5 on field goals and 2-of-2 on three-point attempts for 12 points. Suminski made good on three field goals and two three-pointers for 10 points in the first half.
The Cardinal continued to dominate in the second half, leading at one time by 27 points. Freshman Kristen Newlin, competing in her collegiate debut, came out strong following halftime. After a scoring drought in the first half and only one rebound, Newlin tallied four field goals and one three pointer for nine total points, and seven rebounds by the game's end.
Powell also kicked it up in the second half with seven points and six rebounds to record her first double-double of the season with 11 total points and 12 rebounds.
Scoring in double figures were Trotter (15), Borchardt (14), Suminski (12) and Powell (11). Love & Basketball was led with Michelle Greco, Janae Hubbard and Candace Baldwin with 11 points each. The Cardinal shot 52.7 percent on field goals compared to Love & Basketball's 34.5 percent and led in total rebounds 39-26.
