Cal Tops Athletes in Action, 83-75

BERKELEY - Freshman forward Leon Powe scored 27 points and added eight rebounds to lead California to an 83-75 victory over Athletes in Action in the Golden Bears' first exhibition game of the year Monday night in Haas Pavilion.

In addition, senior forward Amit Tamir added 13 points and freshman guard Ayinde Ubaka had 11 points and three assists.

In the first half, Cal limited AIA to just 28.0 percent shooting from the floor (7-28) to forge a 34-20 lead at the break. Tamir had 11 of his points in the half.

After intermission, Powe scored the Bears' first eight points, assisted on Cal's next basket, then scored four more points to push the Bears to a 48-30 lead with 15:15 to go. The spread reached 22 points at 57-35 with 13:03 left.

AIA, though, put on a rush at the end, eventually clawing to within three points at 78-75 with 27 seconds left. Powe then added a three-point play and freshman Dominic McGuire sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

Cal shot 54.0 percent from the field for the game, including 41.7 percent from three-point range (5-12).

The Bears wrap up their exhibition schedule then they host EA Sports West Friday at 7 p.m. The regular-season opener is Friday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. vs. Cal Poly in Haas.
