Cougars Set to Compete at West Regional

Nov. 10, 2003

THIS WEEK: Washington State will compete at the NCAA West Regionals Saturday...the best runners on the west coast will be competing at the meet... more information on the meet can be found at

WSU WOMEN: The Cougar women harriers are led by senior Anna Blue, juniors Ana Cabrera, Molly Bull and Julia Corbett...the upperclassmen will be joined by freshmen Kayle Peterson, Natalie Smith, and Katie Troy...Blue is coming off of a disappointing 23rd place finish at Pac-10 Championships when she suffered stomach cramps.

WSU MEN: The Cougars are led by junior Danny Wolf and senior Ian Johnson...juniors Mike Heidt and Justin Ireland, and freshmen Alex Grant, Andrew Jones, and Matt Knoff round out the squad...Johnson was the top finisher for the Cougars at 14th at Pac-10 Championships.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING: The top two teams at Regionals will qualify for the NCAA Championships November 24, at Waterloo, Iowa... all other teams will be fighting for at-large bids...the top four individual finishers at the Regional Meet, who are not on a championship qualifying team, but who finished in the top 25, will qualify for the NCAA Championships.

LAST YEAR AT NCAA WEST REGIONALS: The WSU men placed fifth at last year's competition at Pasadena, Calif...Wolf was the first Cougar to cross the finish line with a 23rd place the women's race the Cougars placed sixth...Blue paced the women finishing 20th and Cabrera finished 37th.

COACH Jason Drake ON THE MEN'S 10K: 'The way we train, it will be an advantage to us to go a little longer. We'll face the same teams as we did at Pac-10s and add Portland and Cal Poly. Cal Poly is one of the top teams in the nation, probably the number two team at the meet to Stanford. On paper we're eighth, but fifth would probably be good enough to go to Nationals, maybe sixth. Wolf and Johnson are good flat course runners. I think flat courses help middle distance runners. We are in a tough conference so we'll need to rise up a little bit. Wolf, Johnson, and Heidt have a chance to be in the Top-25 and go to Nationals.'

DRAKE ON THE WOMEN'S RACE: 'We want to finish ahead of all of the teams that we should have been ahead of at Pac-10s. I think we're as good as Oregon, Arizona and USC, but they all beat us. The women really want to come back. They had a horrible day at Pac-10s. Santa Barbara, Portland, and Idaho are really good teams plus the conference. We're 11th or 12th on paper. If Cabrera can finish under 30th we'd be really excited. Anna's (Blue) got to beat a couple women that she's been beaten by pretty badly, but if she races like she did at Pre-Nationals, she's got a great shot. The team's been really sick but by the weekend we should be feeling better.'
