This weekend, the No. 11 ranked UCLA Bruins will travel to Arizona to face off against Arizona State on Friday at 2:00 PM and the University of Arizona on Saturday at 1:00 PM. This season, the Bruins are undefeated with a record of 3-0 overall, 1-0 in Pac-10 competition.

Arizona State and Arizona
The defending Pac-10 Champion Bruins have overall records of 14-7 against Arizona and 12-8-1 against Arizona State. Last season, the Bruins defeated Arizona State 151-87 and lost to Arizona 160-140. At the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, Arizona placed fourth (1,013 points) and Arizona State was sixth (765 points). The Bruins won the 2003 title with 1,399 points.

College Swim Coaches Association of America Poll
In the first College Swim Coaches Association of America poll, released October 29, the Bruins were ranked No. 11 in the nation with 121 points. Topping the list was defending NCAA Champion Auburn with 200 points. UCLA was one of six Pac-10 teams ranked in the Top-15.

San Diego
The Bruins defeated the San Diego Toreros 173-88, improving their record to 3-0 overall. Leading the way were double event winners seniors Sara Platzer and Naoko Watanabe, sophomore Kim Vandenberg and freshman Jane Imagane. Platzer won the 200m and 50m Free in 2:03.54 and 26.22, respectively. Both were NCAA 'B' cut times. Watanabe won the 100m Back (1:03.14) and 200m Back (2:15.88, NCAA 'B' cut time). Vandenberg won the 200m Fly in a NCAA 'A' cut time of 2:11.82. She also won the 100m Fly in 1:00.98 (NCAA 'B' cut time). And, Imagane won the 800m Free (8:47.44) and 400m Free (4:19.36).

Trojan Diving Invitational
At the Trojan Diving Invitational, redshirt freshman Carly Banks was one of the standout Bruin performers. Banks placed second on one-meter, scoring 253.25 points. On three-meter, she scored 423.05 points, placing fifth. On platform, junior Janine Strack placed third with 347.35 points. Both qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships.

2004 NCAA Qualifiers
One Bruin has automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, held March 18-20, 2004 in College Station, TX, and three Bruins have provisional qualifying times.

Sophomore Kim Vandenberg has automatically qualified in the 200m Fly, swimming the 'A' cut time of 2:11.82.

Provisional qualifiers are Sara Platzer (50m and 200m Free), Naoko Watanabe (200m Back) and Vandenberg (100m Fly). The Bruins 200m Medley Relay team of Watanabe, Amy Thurman, Kristen Lewis and Malin Svahnstrom has also provisionally qualified.

2004 NCAA Zone E Qualifiers
Bruin divers Carly Banks, Janine Strack and Paige Thompson have qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships, March 11-13 in Oklahoma City, OK. The top finishers at the Zone meet advance to the NCAA Championships.

Returning All-Americans
The Bruins return six All-Americans from last year's NCAA team. Returning for their senior seasons are Leslie Hovsepian, Kristen Lewis, Sara Platzer and Malin Svahnstrom. Also returning are junior Lindsey Smart and freshman Kim Vandenberg.

2004 Olympic Trials Qualifiers
With the 2004 Olympics just a few months away, nine current Bruins have already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, held June 7-14, 2004.

Leading the way are seniors Cathy Coler (200m Breast), Kristen Lewis (100m/200m Fly), Jackie Lobdell (400m Free), Sara Platzer (50m Free), Naoko Watanabe (100m/200m Back) and Brooke Winkler (200m IM). Sophomore Kim Vandenberg, the 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, has qualified in the 100m and 200m Fly.

Rounding out the list of Bruin Olympic Trials qualifiers are freshmen Jeana Fuccillo (400m IM) and Jane Imagane (400m/800m Free).

Senior Malin Svahnstrom has qualified for the Swedish Olympic Trials.

Looking Ahead
November 21-23, the Bruin swimmers and divers will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational, held in College Station, TX.
