The Facts
The undefeated and top-ranked USC women's volleyball team (24-0, 15-0 Pac-10) - the defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion - returns home this week to face No. 7 Stanford (18-5, 11-3 Pac-10) and No. 9 California (19-4, 10-4 Pac-10). The Women of Troy host the Cardinal on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. The match will be tape delayed by Fox Sports Net and will air starting on Saturday, Nov. 15 (please check local listings for additional dates and times). On Saturday, Nov. 15, USC faces the Golden Bears at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Lyon Center.

The Women of Troy are coming two road victories after defeating Arizona, 3-1, on Friday (Nov. 7), then beating Arizona State, 3-0, on Saturday (Nov. 8). In the two wins, Keao Burdine led the team with 30.0 total points, 3.43 kills and 0.50 aces per game.

USC Looks To Clinch Sole Possession Of Conference Title
USC guaranteed itself at least a share of the 2003 conference championship with last week's wins. A victory over Stanford or Cal this week would ensure sole possession of the Pac-10 title for the Women of Troy. This is only the third-ever Pac-10 title for the Women of Troy, who have won five conference titles in their 27-year program history (1976, 1977 and 1980 WCAA champions, 2000 Pac-10 co-champions, 2002 Pac-10 champions).

The Rankings
After entering the season at No. 1, the Women of Troy have held on to the top spot every week. USC kept all 65 first-place votes to remain No. 1 on this week's USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll and the top spot in the Volleyball magazine poll.

Haley Looking For Notable Wins
Head coach Mick Haley is just two wins shy of his 200th career conference victory and 50th Pac-10 victory. In his 20 years as head coach at the Division I level, Haley has amassed a 198-13 (.938) career conference record, including wins in the Southwest, Big 12 and Pac-10. In just his third year at USC, and as part of the Pac-10, Haley owns a 48-3 (.941) Pac-10 Conference record.

USC Hopes To Surpass Last Year's Attendance
Nearly 2,200 fans (2,115 to be exact) witnessed an outstanding match-up between USC and Stanford last season at the Lyon Center. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a USC volleyball match played at the Lyon Center thanks to an additional 500 seats that were added for the match and a standing-room only group of 300-plus. This week USC hopes to surpass the record and will add an additional 300 seats to accommodate fans at both upcoming matches. Fans can purchase tickets ahead of time by calling (213) 740-GO SC.

Charting the Streaks
USC has won its last 36 consecutive matches (dating back to 11/2/02 when they lost 3-2 to Stanford at home), 14 consecutive home matches and 31 consecutive road matches. The Trojans have not dropped a road match since the 2001 season (a 3-1 loss at Stanford, 11/10/01).

The Only Unbeaten Team
USC is the only Division I team left unbeaten this season after Georgia Tech, who had recorded 23 straight wins to start the season and was the second-to-last team left untouched, endured a 3-2 upset to Maryland on Nov. 1.

24 Wins Match Best Start Since 1977
At 24-0, USC has surpassed last year's 19-0 start (USC dropped to 19-1 after falling to Stanford on Nov. 2, 2002). Its 22-0 record marks the best start since 1977 when USC captured the AIAW National Championship and finished the season with a 38-0 mark - the first undefeated record ever logged by a women's volleyball team in NCAA or AIAW history.

USC Looking For Two More Wins Over Ranked Teams
This week's matches against No. 7 Stanford and No. 9 California will mark the 10th and 11th matches for the Women of Troy against ranked opponents. All of its ranked foes have been ranked among the top 13 and 11 of the 12 have been ranked among the top 10. With arguably the nation's toughest schedule, USC has already defeated No. 2 Hawai'i (Aug. 22), No. 3 Florida (Aug. 21), No. 8 Northern Iowa (Aug. 30), No. 8 Pepperdine (Sept. 3), No. 13 Washington (Oct. 4), No. 7 Stanford (Oct. 17) and No. 10 Washington (Oct. 31), all by 3-0 scores, and beat No. 9 UCLA (Sept. 19), 3-1, and No. 5 California (Oct. 18), 3-2.

Pac-10 Features Five Teams In Top 11
The Pac-10 continues to show why it is the most competitive volleyball conference in the nation. Five Pac-10 teams are ranked among the top 11 in the AVCA poll this week, including No. 1 USC, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 UCLA, , No. 9 California, and No. 11 Washington. Half of the conference is in the top 11. The West Coast Conference (Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, San Diego) is next on the list with four teams ranked in the top 20.

Losing To The Trojans Is A Good Thing?!?!
So far this season, seven of USC's nine ranked opponents have found that losing to USC is not necessarily a bad thing. Of the nine ranked opponents the Women of Troy have faced and beaten, three teams held on to their rankings the following week (#2 Hawai'i, #3 Florida, #13 Washington) and four teams moved up in the polls (Northern Iowa went from #8 to #6, Pepperdine jumped from #8 to #7, UCLA moved from #9 to #8 and Stanford went from #7 to #6). Cal (#5 to #7) and Washington (#10 to #11) were the only teams to drop in the rankings following the loss.

Stanford/Cal Connections
* Cal head coach Rich Feller was an assistant coach to USC head coach Mick Haley with the U.S.A. Women's National Team in 1997-98.
* Defensive specialist Anne Montgomery is the daughter of Stanford men's basketball head coach Mike Montgomery. The 5-7 freshman prepped at St. Francis High in Mountain View, Calif.
* Stanford sophomore outside hitter Courtney Schultz was a prep teammate of USC freshman setter Alex Dunphy at Harvard-Westlake High in North Hollywood, Calif.

NCAA Championship Rematch - Part 2
Friday's match against Stanford will showcase a second rematch of last year's NCAA Championship Final. Last season, USC defeated the Cardinal 3-1 to capture the 2002 national championship in New Orleans, La., and avenged its only loss of the year. During the regular season, USC and Stanford split both match-ups in two thrilling 3-2 victories won by the visiting team. In the first meeting of 2003 at Stanford, the Trojans beat the Cardinal 3-0.

Outstanding Numbers
USC is currently leading the Pac-10 in hitting percentage (.350), opponent hitting percentage (.127), kills (17.38) and assists per game (15.97). The Women of Troy also lead the nation with their .350 attack percentage, in addition to ranking fourth in assists, and fifth in kills and blocks.

It's All About The Team
Just like last season, USC relies on a true 'team' effort to win matches. There is not just one go-to player for the Trojans, there's a team full of standouts all sharing responsibility. Currently, three players are averaging more than 3.22 kills per game (April Ross - 3.59, Emily Adams - 3.49, Keao Burdine - 3.22), three average nearly a block per game (Adams-1.52, Bibiana Candelas-1.26, Katie Olsovsky-0.96), three average more than 2.75 digs per game (Nicole Davis - 3.78, Ross - 3.00, Burdine - 2.75) and six players are hitting above .350 (Adams - .469, Candelas - .438, Kelli Lantz - .500, Staci Venski - .400, Katie Olsovsky - .331 and even setter Toni Anderson - .550).

Arizona/Arizona State Recap
vs. Arizona
- USC got past Arizona with a 3-1 (30-25, 27-30, 30-26, 30-17) victory on Nov. 7 in Tucson. USC sprang out to a 7-1 lead in game one, but the Wildcats worked their way back to knot the score. The Trojans eventually regained control by taking advantage of Arizona's attack errors to win the first game 30-25, despite hitting .114. Their offensive troubles were compounded in game two as the Wildcats captured a 30-27 win and held USC to a .106 mark. Things started to fall into to place for the Women of Troy following the break. USC used a 7-1 run to break away in game three and, thanks to the efforts of April Ross who added six kills off of nine attacks, captured a 30-26 win. Having finally found its rhythm, USC eased to a 30-17 win in the final game, while Ross added seven kills and committed no errors (.583) in the effort.

vs. Arizona State - With contributions from its entire bench, USC eased past Arizona State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-21, 30-12), on Nov. 8. The team shined thanks to the off-the-bench performances of Kelli Lantz, who hit .833 (5-0-6), and Staci Venski, who hit .714 (5-0-7). USC and Arizona State alternated scores for the first 12 points of the match, then, at 12-12 the Women of Troy sprinted to the finish for the 30-21 win. The Sun Devils started game two down 16-7, but put together an 8-3 rally to come within four points, 19-15. That was as close as ASU would get for the remainder of the game. USC rolled to another 30-21 win despite hitting at a .182 clip. USC corrected its hitting problems in game three, rolling to an 18-point (30-12) final game victory.

Head Coach Mick Haley
Mick Haley is in his third season as head coach of the Women of Troy. In 2002, he collected his fifth career national title (three NCAA Division I titles, two JC titles) just two years after arriving at Troy. Haley guided the Women of Troy to the program's first NCAA championship in more than 20 years and became just the second coach in NCAA history to win a national title at two universities (John Dunning is the other). Though hired in 1999 to replace former head coach Lisa Love, Haley completed his term as head coach of the U.S.A. Women's National Team before joining the Trojans in 2001. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he led the United States to an unexpected fourth-place finish. Haley coached Texas for 17 seasons (1980-1996) and led the Longhorns to two national championships. He boasts a 851-193-1 (.815) overall record, 600-142 (.809) NCAA Division I record and a 196-13 (.938) career conference mark.
