Nov. 12, 2003

LOS ANGELES -- USC sophomore catcher Jeff Clement earned 2004 preseason All-America first team honors Wednesday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The NCBWA released its fifth annual preseason teams as Clement was the only catcher to earn first team honors.

Last year in his freshman season at USC, Clement batted .298 with 21 home runs and 53 RBI and earned Collegiate Baseball National Co-Freshman of the Year honors. He also earned Baseball America Freshman All-America first team honors and was named Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year. His 21 home runs were the most by any freshman in USC history. Clement started in all 56 games with 42 starts as the catcher and 14 as the designated hitter.

Clement was also a member of the 2003 U.S. National Team that went 27-2, the highest winning percentage (.931) in USA Baseball history. He batted .256 (20-for-78) with four home runs and 16 RBI for Team USA.

He led the Trojans in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, total bases, runs and walks. He recorded two or more home runs in a game five times during the season and hit three home runs with seven RBI on May 16 vs. Washington State. Clement was named Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week twice during the season.

USC will travel to Havana, Cuba, from Jan. 23-28 and play three exhibition games before starting the 2004 regular season on Friday (Feb. 13) at Long Beach State at 6:30 p.m.
