Off the Trail with Ian Johnson

Ian Johnson is a redshirt-senior on the cross country team. Johnson, from Spokane, Wash., is majoring in linguistics with a minor in Spanish and will graduate in May 2004.
Movie - I really like foreign films. 'Cinema Paradiso' (Italian) is one I really like. I like 'The Gladiator' a lot too.
Book - The Bible
Music - Classical is my favorite. I love Bach and Tchaikovsky. I also like R&B.
Class at WSU - Philosophy of Language with David Shier was a good one and Historical Linguistics with Lynn Gordon too. I also like language classes.
Pro team - Minnesota Vikings
Pro athlete - Haile Gebrselassie (5000m and 1000m World Record holder)
What is your favorite post-race food? - The day after the race I like to spoil myself with fast food.
Do you prefer reality TV or daytime TV? - If I have to choose one it would be reality.
If you were going to be on Survivor, what would your luxury item be? - A journal
Most memorable sports moment - The UW Dual last year when I won the steeplechase in a close race with Jesse Fayant.
What is your fantasy job? - I'd like to incorporate running professionally with languages. More realistically I'd like to work with classical languages.
Do you have a pre-race routine? - I make sure I drink my tea, chai na maziwa (Kenyan tea).
What conditioning drill do you most dislike? - Lifting weights
What is your ideal vacation? - Being somewhere on the Mediterranean.
The best thing about Pullman is - I like being able to train on the dirt roads. It's a rural community where I always run into friends and people I know.
The thing you miss most about home - My family.
If you could meet anybody, dead or alive, it would be? - My mom's dad. I never met him and I wonder how things would be different if I could have met my grandfather.
Why do you run? - Running is the love of my life. It makes me feel alive.
What advice would you give a young runner? - Try to live a balanced lifestyle. Don't let any aspects of your life cloud another. Life is like a roller coaster. There will be ups and downs so be persistent and keep working hard.
