Nov. 13, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State sophomore outside hitter Sarah Watkins has been named to the CoSida Academic All-District VIII second-team for her outstanding accomplishments on the court and in the classroom.

Watkins (Mishawaka, Ind.) has a 4.0 GPA in the classroom as an education major with an emphasis on Spanish. On the court, Watkins has started all 23 of ASU's matches while helping lead the Sun Devils to a 8-15 record. She is fourth on the team averaging 2.11 kills per game. She has recorded 10 or more kills in nine matches, including a career-high 15 against Washington State (Sept. 19).

Watkins selection to the All-District VIII team continues ASU's academic legacy. The Sun Devil program ranks tops in the Pac-10 with 30 all-time all-conference academic selections and is fourth in the nation with nine Academic All-America honors.

The six first-team selections from the All-District VIII team will advance to the voting for the national academic team. The Pac-10 had three selections on the first team: Stanford's Ogonna Nnamani and Sara McGee and USC middle blocker Emily Adams. Junior libero Tina Brennan (Fresno State), senior outside hitter Lily Kahumoku (Hawai'i) and middle blocker Kim Turner (Utah) rounded out the first-team.
