Nov. 14, 2003
Tucson, Ariz. (Nov. 14) - The University of Arizona women's gymnastics team signed two student-athletes to National Letters- of- Intent for the 2004-05 season, announced head coach Bill Ryden on Friday. Danielle Hicks and Karin Wurm will join the Wildcats next season.
Danielle Hicks, from Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, is the third Canadian signee for Arizona in the last two years. Hicks, a 5-4 tumbler from ASF Gymnastics under coaches Paula Johnson and Brenda Mader, is a two-time Canadian champion and a four-time Provincial champion. Hicks is an international gymnast who has competed in Romania and in England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games where she finished fourth on beam.
'Danielle has extensive international background, with a strong gymnastics resume that includes a 2002 Canadian National championship,' Ryden said. 'She is obviously no stranger to high levels of competition.'
Karin Wurm, a 5-4 gymnast from Wilmington, Del., is a member of AJS Pancott, under coaches Steve Pancott, Ed Pozo and Sue Weldon. Wurm is a three-time Junior Olympic National qualifier and was a Junior Olympic team member in 2002. She has also claimed two Region VII vault championships and was named the 2002 Pennsylvania state champion.
'Karin has a very high gymnastics skill level who will have an impact and will definitely make our team better the first time she steps in the gym,' Ryden said.
'I'm very happy with the class,' Ryden said. 'We signed two elite-caliber athletes that will come in and make an impact on all four of our team events. Both Danielle and Karin had other offers from some prominent programs and we feel honored that they chose us. Our team and program will definitely benefit because of it. Both are also very good students who will succeed at the college level academically.'
The Arizona women's gymnastics team opens the upcoming season on Jan. 9, 2004 in East Lansing, Mich., when the Wildcats take on Michigan St., Western Michigan and LSU.
