Arizona Women's Tennis: Fall Season Review

The Arizona women's tennis team has completed the fall season. Junior Dianne Hollands had the best showing for the Wildcats with a 12-4 record and two appearences in national championship events. The Wildcats will begin dual match action at home on Jan. 30 against Northern Arizona.

Baylor Invitational
Sept. 19-21
The Arizona women's tennis team took all eight of their players to Waco, Texas for the tournament hosted by Baylor University. The tournament was broken up into two brackets, a gold bracket and a green bracket. Senior Debbie Larocque and junior Dianne Hollands both competed in the green bracket and had two of the best showings for the Wildcats. Larocque advanced to the semifinals before losing to Texas's Petra Dizdar. Hollands also advanced to the semifinals, but was unable to advance to the finals due to a loss to Kentucky's Aibika Kalsarieva. Junior Maja Mlakar had the best individual showing for the Wildcats. She competed in the gold bracket and did not lose a set in the tournament. She was set to compete in the finals against Tulane's Jenny Kuhn before the tournament was cancelled due to rain. The doubles team of Mlakar and Hollands had advanced to the final round of the green doubles bracket, but also found their match cancelled due to the rain.

Riviera/ ITA Women's All-American Championships
Oct. 4-8
The ITA All-American Championships took place in Pacific Palisades, Calif. As the premier hard-court event of the fall collegiate season, the tournament features the top women in collegiate tennis and players must be selected in order to compete. The Wildcats competed sophomore Iza Ferreira, junior Dianne Hollands, freshman Kasia Jakowlew, senior Debbie Larocque, and junior Maja Mlakar. Ferreira, Jakowlew, and Larocque all competed in the pre-qualifying tournament and lost in first round action. Dianne Hollands began in the qualifying tournament. She won two matches over Harvard's Eva Wang and Stanford's Theresa Logar to advance to the main draw tournament. Hollands then lost in the first round of main draw competition in three sets to Stanford's Alice Barnes. Mlakar began the competition in the main draw tournament and lost in the first round to Northwestern's Cristelle Grier.

ITA Women's West Regionals
Oct. 23-27

The ITA Women's West Regionals took place in San Diego, Calif. and was co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State University. The Wildcats traveled sophomore Iza Ferreira, freshman Kasia Jakowlew, junior Dianne Hollands, senior Debbie Larocque, and junior Maja Mlakar. Jakowlew won her qualifying tournament match to advance to the main draw competition. Hollands, Larocque, and Perry all advanced to the round of 16. Hollands won her matches and was set to compete in the semifinals before the tournament was cancelled due to wildfires in the Southern California region. The doubles team of Perry and Hollands were also unable to compete in their quarterfinal match due to the cancellation.

Fall Desert Classic
Nov. 6

The Wildcats traveled back to Southern California to compete in the Fall Desert Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Sophomore Kelly Duncan, senior Debbie Larocque, and junior Kelly Perry all competed in the tournament. All three lost in first round action. The doubles team of Larocque and Perry also lost in the opening round. Larocque and Duncan went on to play in consolation competition. Both lost their matches in consolation play.

ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships
Nov. 6-9

Junior Dianne Hollands was the lone Wildcat selected to travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. and compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The championships are the second of three national championships for collegiate tennis this season. Hollands was chosen as an at large selection. In the first round, Hollands defeated Florida's Jennifer Magley in three sets 2-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(9). The junior then competed against Armstrong Atlantic's Zsofia Golopencza and won in two sets 6-4, 6-0. After advancing to the quarterfinals, Hollands lost to the No. 3 seed of the tournament, Northwestern's Cristelle Grier 6-2, 6-1.
