Bruins Defeat Arizona State 186-114

Tempe, AZ - In their return to Pac-10 competition, the Bruin swimmers and divers defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 186-114. On the day, UCLA swept three events and went one-two in three events (all events were short course meters). With the victory, the Bruins are 13-8-1 against the Sun Devils. UCLA is now 4-0 overall, 2-0 in Pac-10 play.
Freshman Jane Imagane and sophomore Kim Vandenberg led the Bruins, each winning a pair of events. Imagane led a sweep of the 800 Free, winning in 8:44.05. She also won the 400 Free in 4:17.33. Kim Vandenberg won the 200 and 100 Fly. In the 200 Fly, she swam a NCAA 'A' cut time for the second week in a row, winning in a season best 2:11.32. In the 100 Fly, she swam a NCAA 'B' time of 1:00.66.
Also victorious for the Bruins were seniors Sara Platzer, Malin Svahnstrom and Naoko Watanabe, sophomore Paige Thompson and freshman Katie Arnold. Platzer won the 50 Free in 25.70 (NCAA 'B' time) and was second in the 100 Free (57.01, NCAA 'B' time). Svahnstrom won the 200 Free in 2:01.58 (NCAA 'B' time). In the 200 Back, Watanabe led a Bruin sweep, winning in 2:15.54 (NCAA 'B' time). She was also part of a Bruin sweep in the 100 Back, placing second in 1:03.12. Thompson won the three-meter springboard, setting a new school record of 329.70 points, and was second on one-meter (267.60). And, Arnold led the sweep of the 100 Back in 1:02.70.
Bruin highlights on the day were a school record breaking performance in the 400 IM and the sweeps of the 800 Free, 100 Back and 200 Back. Junior Kim Scarborough set a new school short course meters record in the 400 IM, placing second in 4:49.95. Scarborough broke the previous record of 4:53.09, set by Jen Noddle in 1999. In the 800 Free, won by Imagane, freshman Katie Nelson was second (3:46.83) and sophomore Liz Keating was third (8:56.07). In the 100 Back, won by Arnold, Watanabe was second and junior Kim Scarborough was third (1:04.06), And, in the 200 Back, won by Watanabe, freshman Courtney Iversen was second (2:16.59) and Scarborough was third (2:17.28).
UCLA also went one-two in three events. In the 200 and 100 Fly, each won by Vandenberg, senior Kristen Lewis placed second in 2:15.21 (NCAA 'B' time) and 1:02.50, respectively. In the 400 Free, won by Imagane, Nelson was second in 4:19.56.
The Bruins will face Arizona tomorrow, November 15, at 1:00 PM in Tucson.
