Nov. 14, 2003

LOS ANGELES - Fourth-seeded UCLA tallied two first-half goals and played excellent defense the rest of the way, defeating San Diego, 2-0 in an NCAA First Round match at UCLA's Drake Stadium Friday. With the victory, the Bruins (17-1-3) advance to face Pepperdine (14-5-1) in the second round on Sunday. The Waves defeated USC, 1-0 earlier in the evening.

UCLA got on the board in the 24th minute of play when Bruin forward Lindsay Greco registered her fifth goal of the year on assists from Bristyn Davis and Sarah-Gayle Swanson. The Bruins ended up scoring their second goal of the match just 34 seconds later when Davis slipped a shot past San Diego goalkeeper Libby Bassett for a 2-0 UCLA advantage. Swanson assisted on that goal as well.

San Diego had its best chance to score in the 28th minute of play when Colleen Fogarty had an open net opportunity after drawing out Bruin goalkeeper Arianna Criscione. Her shot however sailed wide after a deflection from an oncoming UCLA defender.

The Bruins outshot the Toreros, 26-2 on the evening. Criscione made one save in 90 minutes of action. USD's Bassett finished with 10 saves. Davis finished with a match-high six shots.

It marks the fifth year in a row that UCLA has won its opening match of the NCAA Tournament.
