Cal Falls to Team Concept, 66-57

Nov. 15, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - California lost its final exhibition game of 2003, 66-57, to Team Concept Saturday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears won their only other exhibition game, 81-72, over the Bay Area Pro-Am on Nov. 2. Team Concept closed out its eight-game tour against college teams with a 6-2 record.

'Our defense was much better today,' said Cal head coach Caren Horstmeyer. 'At times in the second half, we lost some intensity, and we gave them a couple of easy baskets. Our ball pressure was better. Our help side was early and aggressive. I was much more encouraged by that.'

Junior forward Kiki Williams equaled her 15 points in the first game to pace Cal. Senior guard LaTasha O'Keith and freshman center Emmelie Geraedts added nine points apiece. Senior Olga Volkova grabbed 14 rebounds to propel the Bears to a 58-47 advantage on the glass.

Team Concept was led by Lenae Williams (22 points) and Felicia Ragland (10 points). Former Cal players Amber White and Sherrise Smith tallied seven and two points, respectively.

Cal led 44-42 with 13:19 to play in the game following two made free throws from Kristin Iwanaga. Behind three straight three-point shots, Team Concept went on a 20-6 run to build its largest lead of the game at 62-50 with 4:56 on the clock.

The Bears twice cut the lead to seven points during the closing minutes.

'When we get shots within our offense, we do really well,' said Horstmeyer, whose team shot 25.3 percent and held Team Concept to 38.5 percent. 'When they got a lead, we started shooting shots outside the offense. That was reflected in our offense tonight.'

Cal held its biggest lead of the game at 7-1 four minutes into the game. Team Concept led by as many as seven points following a basket by Lenae Williams, but Kiki Williams first of two treys for the game helped send the Bears into the locker room down by only two at 31-29.

Nihan Anaz, Cal's leading scorer last season at 10.1 ppg, sat out today's game with a back injury that isn't expected to keep her out of the Bears season opener against South Carolina State Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
