Cal Sweeps Season Series Over Stanford With 1-0 Win

Nov. 15, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - With one final opportunity to impress the NCAA Tournament committee and get to 10 wins, Cal came through today in a 1-0 victory over the Stanford. The Bears must now wait to hear if their 10-8-2 record will be good enough for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament birth.

This was a tense game throughout with very few opportunities. The Bears were able to do what they have failed to do so often - get on the scoreboard early. In the 33rd minute, Pieter Berger fed a ball to striker Carl Acosta. Acosta laced a shot up into the right hand corner, past Stanford goalkeeper Robby Fulton. Berger has seen his playing time go up in recent weeks, as he has become a starter. The move has paid great dividends for Coach Kevin Grimes.

With the goal they desperately needed, the Bears tightened up and played solid defense that has been their trademark all season. Stanford only had four shots in the game and only one in the second half. Mike Oseguera only had to make one save to record his sixth shutout of the season. The lone shot on goal for the Cardinal came from leading scorer Matt Janusz.

Cal only managed 11 shots, led by Acosta's four. With his goal, Acosta finished the season with a team high nine goals.

With the win, Cal improved its record over Stanford to 3-0-1 the last two years. The Bears look to next Saturday as their next possible game to continue their three-game winning streak. That is contingent on whether they are selected for postseason. They will find out if they have a bid to the NCAA Tournament this Monday when the selection show airs on ESPNews at 1 p.m. PT.
