Bruin Swimming and Diving Falls to Arizona 154-145

Tucson, AZ - In today's match-up between the UCLA Bruins and Arizona Wildcats, the Bruins lost 154-145. The Bruins have an overall record of 14-8 against the Wildcats. UCLA is now 4-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-10.
Sophomore Kim Vandenberg led the Bruins, winning the 100 and 200 Fly. In the 100 Fly, she swam 55.31 (NCAA `B' time). Also victorious was senior Sara Platzer, who won the 50 Free in 23.61 and also placed second in the 100 Free in 51.37. The 200 Free Relay team of Vandenberg, Amy Thurman, Malin Svahnstrom and Platzer won in 1:34.39. In the diving events, sophomore Paige Thompson won the three-meter with a score of 294.45 points. Redshirt freshman Carly Banks won the one-meter with 260.55 points and was second on three-meter (280.65 points).
Other top performers were freshman Katie Nelson, Svahnstrom, senior Naoko Watanabe, sophomore Shellene Catalano, and Thurman. Nelson placed second in both the 1000 and 500 Free in 9:56.24 and 4:52.41 (NCAA `B' time), respectively. Svahnstrom placed second in the 200 IM (2:04.89) and third in the 200 Free in 1:50.55 (NCAA `B' time). Watanabe placed second in the 200 Back in 2:01.78 (NCAA `B' time) and third in the 100 Back in 57.76. Catalano placed third in the 100 and 200 Breast in 1:06.18 and 2:20.86, respectively. Thurman was second in the 50 Free (24.01).
The Bruins will compete at the Texas A&M Invitational next weekend, November 21-23, in College Station, TX. UCLA will return to dual meet and conference action January 7, 2004, against Washington State.
