Washington Upsets No. 16 OSU 1-0 In Seattle
Nov. 16, 2003
SEATTLE, Wash. - -
Brett Wiesner's goal in the 76th minute lifted the Washington Huskies to a 1-0 win over No. 16 Oregon State in Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer action on the final day of the regular season Sunday at Husky Soccer Field.
The Beavers finished the regular season second in the Pac-10 with a 7-3-0 record and a 13-6-0 mark overall, matching last year's school record for wins.
Both the second place Pac-10 finish and seven conference wins are school highs.
OSU now awaits word on qualification for the NCAA College Cup; the selection show airs Monday at 1 p.m. on ESPNews (DirecTV channel 207, Dish Network channel 142, and Comcast cable channel 402).
'We worked very hard, but overall I didn't think we were on the cutting edge on the day,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said. 'We created opportunities, but we didn't finish them and we allowed several opportunities on the defensive side as well. At this level, it's about playing on the cutting edge and playing with concentration.
'Having said that, I am proud of the guys for their effort today - this was a step up from last weekend at UCLA (a 5-0 loss). Washington is a tough place to play.'
Wiesner, who fired a team-high seven shots, scored off a cross from Troy Ready at 75:48; Mike Chabala was also credited with an assist on the play.
Peter Billmeyer made nine saves in the OSU net as the Huskies (12-4-2, 5-4-1) put 10 of their 19 shots on goal Sunday.
The Beavers have lost two games in a row for the first time since losses to Fresno State and UCLA Nov. 1-3 last year.
The loss also ended a three-game winning streak against the Huskies.
The first round of the NCAA College Cup begins Nov. 21-22.
