UCLA has just two matches remaining on its2003 regular season schedule,and they areboth on the road.First,the Bruins travel acrosstown this Friday for their Pac-10 finale againsttop-ranked and undefeated USC.The Womenof Troy clinched the Pac-10 title last week,whilethe Bruins are trying to catch Stanford for secondplace in the Pac-10 standings.Following Friday 'sPac-10 finale,the Bruins will travel to Malibu,CA,next Tuesday to face fourth-rankedPepperdine at Firestone Field House.The Bruinsare hoping to earn a host site for the first and second round of the NCAA Championship.Teamselection and First/Second Round sites will be announced on Nov.30 at 5 pm on ESPNEWS.
BRUINS FALL TO STANFORD,REMAIN PERFECT VS.CALIFORNIAThe Bruins played two four-game matches last week,falling to No.7 Stanford before defeating No.9 California.In Thursday night 's match against the Cardinal,Brynn Murphy led the Bruins with 17kills and 20 points,with Colby Lyman also turning in an impressive performance with a career-high 15 kills with 11 digs,a career high-tying two aces and a block assist for 17.5 points.On Friday night,UCLA improved to 44-0 all-time against the Golden Bears with a four-game winin Pauley Pavilion.Four Bruins had double-figure kills led by 21 from Murphy.Brittany Ringel tiedher career-high with three aces,and several other Bruins had solid performances,includingKrystal McFarland who tied her career-high with six kills in the match.UCLA VS.USC (26-0,17-0 PAC-10)
UCLA holds a 50-41 all-time record against the Women of Troy,and the Bruins are 17-13 in therivalry when playing on USC 's campus.USC is coached by Mick Haley who is in his third seasonat USC with a 75-8 record.He is 605-142 in his 20th season as an NCAA head coach.Last Time(Sept. 19, 2003): The Bruins became the first team this season to win a game against USC,butlost the match 30-21,22-30,30-19,30-22 in Pauley Pavilion.UCLA 's Heather Cullen led the Bruinswith 17 kills and 20 points in the match,while Brynn Murphy also had double-figure kills with 13.
THE LEXUS GAUNTLET:UCLA VS.USCFriday 's match will assign the final five women 's volleyball-related pointsfor the 2003-04 athletic year,unless the two teams were to meet duringNCAA Championship play.The Bruins won the award for the 2002-03year,while USC was presented with the inaugural award following the2001-02 athletic year.Women 's Volleyball accounts for 10 points in theGauntlet standings.USC won five points in the standings with its Sept.19victory over UCLA,with the remaining five awarded this Friday.There area total of 110 points available,distributed over 18 sports.For more informationon the Lexus Gauntlet,visit the Gauntlet Trophy page.
HEAD COACH Andy BanachowskiIn his 37th season on the Bruin bench,UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski remains one of thetop coaches in his profession.On Sept.1,2001,in Hawaii,he became the first collegiate women 'svolleyball coach in history to record 900 career wins,and is just the second collegiate volleyballcoach for either gender to reach that milestone.UCLA men 's coach Al Scates,for whomBanachowski was a setter during his collegiate career,posted his 1,000th career win in February,2000.The first women 's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Famein Holyoke,MA,Banachowski currently has a career record of 960-241 (.799),and has coachedthe Bruins to six national championships,including three NCAA titles.
