WSU To Take on Cross State Rival

THIS WEEK: The Washington State University women's swim team heads to Seattle to take on No. 21 Washington...the Cougars face off against the Huskies Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m...the dual meet against UW is the second Pac-10 competition of the season for WSU.
'We're going in very excited to swim,' WSU Head Coach Erica Quam said. 'It is a good rivalry to have. I think we just want to focus on one event at a time and really make the best of each race we have.'
LAST WEEK: Washington State had last week off after competing in the Rice Invitational Nov. 7 and 8...after sitting in second after day one of the competition, the Cougars finished third...Rice won the competition, followed by Arkansas in second.
COACH QUAM: WSU Head Coach Erica Quam is in her second season as the women's swimming coach.
AGAINST THE HUSKIES: the Cougars have a record of 2-23-1 against the Huskies...WSU fell to UW, 164-93, last season, after defeating the Huskies in 2000 and 2001.
IN THE NATION: Washington State has several top times nationally according to Taper and Shave's Quick 50 Swimming Times...freshman Monika Povilonyte, currently has the 23rd best time in the 200 breaststroke...she has the 29th best time in the 100 breaststroke...fellow freshman Erin McCleave is 49th in the 200 free...the Cougar relay teams are 44th in the medley relay, 43rd in the 200 medley relay, and 50th in the 800 free relay.
THIS SEASON: The Cougars added 12 newcomers to the 10 returning letter winners...WSU currently has a record of 1-2 in dual meets this season.
ACADEMICS: WSU finished third in the nation academically spring semester 2003 (3.5).
UP NEXT: The Cougs take next week off...some members of the team will head to Federal Way for the U.S. Open, Thursday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 6...other WSU swimmers will compete in the Invitational in Ellensburg Dec. 5-7.
