Nov. 20, 2003

Los Angeles, Calif. -- Kaes Van't Hof of Newport Beach, Calif. -- son of former Trojan tennis great Robert Van't Hof -- has signed a letter of intent with the USC men's tennis team, head coach Peter Smith announced today.

Van't Hof, a left-hander who plays No. 1 singles and doubles at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, is currently the SCTA's (Southern California Tennis Association) No. 1-ranked under-18 singles player. As a junior, he reached the finals of the CIF Division I Singles Championships and was named to the Los Angeles Times Boy's Tennis All-Star second team.

Among his top performances this year, Van't Hof finished seventh at the 18-and-under national championships held in Kalamazoo, Mich., and advanced to the doubles finals at the Super National Clay Courts in Louisville, Ky. In 2002 he captured 16-and-under doubles titles at the USTA Super National Winter Championships (in addition to advancing to the singles finals) and the USTA National Open.

'I think Kaes is great player and will be a very important addition to our program,' said Smith, who is entering his second season at Troy. 'He has a ton of talent and is the complete package - a great athlete, as well as a great student. He is exactly the person we need to take our program in the right direction.'

Van't Hof boasts a 4.5 grade point average at Mater Dei.
