Newell Leads UW Football Pac-10 Academic Honorees

Nov. 20, 2003

SEATTLE - A total of eight University of Washington football teams have been named to the 2003 Pac-10 All-Academic teams that were announced today.

The group of eight was led by junior safety Jimmy Newell, who was named to the first team. Newell, from Port Orchard, Wash., carries a 3.25 grade point average and is majoring in economics.

Three Huskies made the second team: sophomore defensive end Ty Eriks (3.67 GPA in art), sophomore safety James Sims, Jr. (3.32 in comparative literature) and senior punter Garth Erickson (3.07 in economics). Eriks, incidentally, was listed by the Pac-10 at running back. He started the year at fullback before moving to the defense.

Additionally, four Washington players received honorable mention: redshirt-freshman tailback Scott Ballew, junior kicker Evan Knudson, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Donny Mateaki and sophomore quarterback Casey Paus.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant substitute. Following is the 2003 Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic Football Team:
