Washington State Stomps VMI 66-46

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Marcus Moore scored 14 points to lead a balancedscoring attack and Washington State defeated Virginia Military Institute 66-46Thursday night at the Top of the World Classic.

The victory was the first for the Cougars under coach Dick Bennett, who ledWisconsin to the Final Four in 2000 and abruptly retired eight months later.

Washington State broke the game open early in the second half with a 17-3run. The Cougars forced VMI to rely on the outside shot, and the KeyDets hitjust four of 19 3-point attempts.

Washington State will play Alaska Fairbanks, which earlier beat Texas-SanAntonio 66-48, in the tournament semifinals Saturday.

Both teams had trouble scoring early and made just one field goal apiece inthe first five minutes. The Cougars hit only one of their first 11 shots, a3-pointer.

Despite shooting just 23 percent, they led 25-22 when Moore hit a 3-pointerwith 2 seconds remaining in the half.

Washington State shot 56 percent the second half and 41 percent for thegame. Ezenwa Ukeagu scored 12 points and made his first six field-goal attemptsfor the Cougars.

Radee Skipworth led the Keydets with 13 points and pulled down fiverebounds.
