Nov. 20, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Head UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras announced the signing of three highly-ranked junior tennis players, including two local Southern California products, to national letters of intent Thursday. All three are currently ranked in the top-30 nationally in the USTA Girls' 18s rankings. The players are Riza Zalameda of Los Angeles, Tracy Lin of Anaheim, Calif. and Elizabeth Lumpkin of Naperville, IL.
'This is the best class we've signed in a while and I'm really excited to have these players join our program,' said Sampras. 'All three have played at the highest level of competition of junior tennis and I expect them to come in and contribute right away.'
Below are bios on UCLA's three signees.
Riza Zalameda (Los Angeles/Beverly Hills HS)
Zalameda currently ranks No. 14 nationally in singles, including a top-5 ranking in Southern California. She was the girls' 18s winner (w/Anne Yelsey) at the USTA Super National Hardcourts in August, earning a spot in the main doubles draw at the 2003 U.S. Open. Her and Yelsey have also captured titles at the 2003 Easter Bowl, the 2002 Super National Claycourts and the 2002 Super National Hardcourts (16s). In 2002 she was ranked as high as No. 4 in the USTA Girls' 16s singles rankings and was the No. 2-ranked 16-year old in Southern California. Zalameda has also represented the United States in several international events, helping Team USA capture the prestigious Maureen Connolly Continental Cup in 2002. She has also participated on the U.S. Junior Fed Cup squad.
Tracy Lin (Anaheim, CA/Canyon HS)
Lin, one of the top players in Southern California the last six years, is ranked No. 21 nationally and No. 7 in the Southern California Section. She was named a high school All-American in 2002 and 2003. In April of this year she reached the doubles final (w/Lejla Hodzic) at the Easter Bowl, and in 2002, registered a third-place showing (w/Jessica Nguyen) at the USTA Super National Winter Championships. Lin, who has captured a number of sectional titles, has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the Southern California Girls' 18s and 16s singles rankings. Her brother Eric was a three-time All-American in doubles at UCLA, playing from 1994-97.
Elizabeth Lumpkin (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central HS)
Lumpkin is the top-ranked player in the USTA's Midwest Section and is ranked No. 29 nationally. She is the first player in Illinois high school history to capture four state singles titles. She took third place in doubles (w/Jessi Robinson) at the USTA Super National Claycourts in July and reached the semifinals (also w/Robinson) at the Super National Hardcourts in August. She and Zalameda were teammates on the 2002 U.S. Junior Fed Cup squad.
