In the first day of competition at the Texas A&M Fall Invitational, held in College Station, TX, the No. 11 Bruins have scored 619 points and are in first place. The Bruins had record-breaking short course meters performances in today's action. In the 200 IM, senior Malin Svahnstrom, swam 2:12.81, breaking the previous record of 2:16.50 set by Keiko Price in 1999. Svahnstrom, who also holds the school 200 IM record in short course yards (1:59.58), has now automatically qualified in the 200 IM for the NCAA Championships. The Bruin 200 Free Relay of Kim Vandenberg, Amy Thurman, Svahnstrom and Sara Platzer set a new school record of 1:42.57, breaking the old record set in 2000. The time, which is also a NCAA 'B' cut time, captured the victory for the Bruins.

Leading the way individually was Platzer, who won the 50m Free in 25.34. Platzer's time is a NCAA automatic qualifying time, making her one of three Bruins this season who have automatically qualified for the national championship meet. In the 500m Free, freshman Jane Imagane placed second in 4:11.86 (NCAA 'B' time). The 400 Medley Relay squad of Katie Arnold, Leslie Hovsepian, Vandenberg and Platzer also placed second in a time of 4:09.30 (NCAA 'B' cut time).

In the three-meter springboard, sophomore Paige Thompson placed fifth with 461.95 points. Redshirt freshman Carly Banks was ninth with 417.95 points and junior Janine Strack placed 11th with 408.85 points. Sophomores Sara Clark and Amanda Blong finished 14th and 16th, respectively, with 396.05 and 383.90 points.

The Texas A&M Fall Invitational will continue tomorrow at the Texas A&M Natatorium and will conclude Sunday, November 23.
